We thought it would be fantastic, growing our own vegetables, tending them, cropping them, and eating them, but no-one told us that growing potatoes would actually be fun!
We decided to dig up our first crop on Sunday, as we had friends staying with us and thought serving our own food would be pretty cool. We knew the basic theory: plant a few seed potatoes and they automagically turn into loads of potatoes…
But the bit that no-one told us? It’s like digging for buried treasure, except better because you can eat the treasure at the end! Even Leoma was excited – her tail was wagging faster than my camera shutter!
And here’s our loot: Woo hoo!

You know what’s even more fun? They NEVER go away! My FIL tells me that I will be digging them up from the same bed 20 years from now! That kills me.
And look at the colour of your soil! so black! Beautiful.
How fabulous! I hope you made some potato people before you ate them!!
Oh, I love growing potatoes! They don’t require a whole lot of work and they are such fun to dig up. We have the most fun playing with the odd shaped ones and deciding what they look like. (usually obscene… )
The gift that keeps on giving – fab! Were they as tasty as they look? I’m growing beetroot for the first time this year, trouble is I don’t know how to tell when they’re ‘done’… this gardening business can be a bit tricky. Exciting but tricky!
Your soil does look very fertile. What have you been putting on it? Potatoes look yummy too. Did you manage to get them to the table within an hour? Apparently they’re extra delicious if you do.
I love home grown potatoes! Too bad I can’t grow them in a condo!
I love your little columbine volunteer with the potatoes, I have them all over, too. You’ll probably have potato volunteers next year, too.
i have a tiny garden now, & am on a mission to grow as much as possible in pots – so far its all going mad, sprouting away all over the place!
anyone with teeny tiny gardens – you can grow potatoes in a grow bag, stand it on its narrow end, cut a slit half way up, slip seed spuds inside, water, (i then peg the gap shut)trim off the top of the bag – hey presto, they grow like mad!
That’s so fun! I wanna grow potatoes now!
They look great, I must try growing them. I have a few veg but potatoes look great for kids to dig!
What did you make with them? I have never thought of growing potatoes – I tend to not be a very good vegetable gardener because I’m too focused on the flowers. But I did plant scarlet runner beans because they do make flowers and then turn into lovely green beans. p.s. the dog is so beautiful!
